Continuing Our Legacy of Nontradition

April 6, 2017

Chancellor Khosla at the Campaign for UC San Diego Campaign Launch

UC San Diego is known for being an experimental campus, going big and taking risks. We target the path less traveled because we invent the way forward. Once again, we are taking the ambitious lead in announcing the public phase of our historic 10-year, $2 billion Campaign for UC San Diego. The goal is impressive, bold and a first among San Diego universities. To date, we have raised $1.3 billion toward our goal.

The time is right for the Campaign for UC San Diego. We are an ever evolving and always improving campus, and we have big transformational plans to meet the growing needs of our campus. We are enhancing the student experience by increasing undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships and student services. We are enriching our university by modernizing teaching and research facilities, and creating a living-learning campus infrastructure that promotes collaboration and community. We are sparking research and innovation by boosting our number of endowed chairs and building transformational research programs that have the potential to save and improve the lives of people around the world.

Our unconventional tradition of nontradition has led us to become one of the greats among our global peers in an unparalleled short time frame. We redefine what it means to be a public research university. Our perpetual curiosity, drive and capacity to positively impact our local and global communities are fueled by the talent of our campus members and the support of our philanthropic visionaries, and they are only limited by our resources.

Backed by a legion of champions, we are empowering and invigorating our purposeful campus through the Campaign for UC San Diego. Our Campaign Cabinet is composed of more than 50 leaders; more than half are alumni. Our honorary chairs—Joan and Irwin Jacobs, Ernest Rady and Denny Sanford—continue to shape our campus through their generosity, leadership and vision. We are also fortunate to have one of our strongest advocates, alumnus Ken Kroner, chairing the Campaign’s International Leadership Committee. The collective commitment and enthusiasm of our Campaign Cabinet is inspiring and, together, we will achieve our transformational fundraising goal.

This isn’t just our Campaign. This is the world’s Campaign. We are going to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet today. I encourage you to join us in our journey to change lives and make our world a better place.

With kind regards,

Pradeep K. Khosla
