As we wrap up the year and I conclude my first quarter at UC San Diego, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family happy holidays, and thank you for the warm welcome into the Triton community.

I look forward to continuing our work together in the new year, especially as we progress through our strategic planning process to define the future of UC San Diego. I believe we have a bright future ahead and, by undergoing this planning process, we will be able to develop shared goals and a shared vision for our campus. This initiative will help us to explore our role in our community and world, and also serve as a guide as we generate and secure the necessary resources to achieve our goals.

I encourage you to visit our strategic planning website at plan.ucsd.edu to learn more and to get involved. We are just beginning our town hall meetings this month, and there will be many more opportunities to participate and give feedback in the months ahead.

As I mentioned in my investiture speech, UC San Diego is one campus with multiple pillars of excellence. My vision is to ensure that this is a campus that provides opportunity for all; that we are student-focused and student-centered; and that we are a campus that is the hallmark for the future of education and research and service. By working together toward common goals, we can further our impact, transform lives and answer questions for humanity.

Enjoy the holidays.
